Canon Point: Right after her fight with Cassie in 2x08, "All My Life, My Heart Has Yearned for a Thing I Cannot Name"
Condition: Very small cut on one of her feet. Healthy and in good condition otherwise.

History:
cw: very brief mention of childhood sexual abuse (not graphic), drug use, domestic violence

When Maddy was young, she frequently competed in child beauty pageants. She was very good at this and would often win, due to her high levels of self-confidence making her a crowd favorite. However, when it came out that a local pageant coach had been molesting the girls he coached, Maddy's mother panicked and banned Maddy from competing in any further pageants. Maddy wasn't molested by the coach and, in fact, never even met him, but her mom's mind was made up. At first, Maddy was devastated by this, and protested in many ways including not eating for a week, but her mom refused to give in.

Eventually, Maddy realized she "loved doing nothing" and that she "just wanted to continue doing what she did, minus school and all the other bullshit". She gave up her dreams of competing in pageants, and decided she just wanted to have rich men finance her lifestyle instead. She based her desires on Sharon Stone's character in "Casino", whom she idolized.

Maddy also wanted to avoid the strained, loveless relationship her parents had. From the time she was ten years old, her father - who frequently struggled to hold down a job - slept on the couch, and her parents' relationship was distant and cold. Maddy viewed living a rich, lavish lifestyle financed by multiple wealthy men as a way to avoid becoming overly dependent on one man, and lived in fear of the idea that she would end up in a relationship like her mother's and father's, with her supporting someone she felt no passion for.

At some point, Maddy began dating Nate Jacobs, a popular football player. Unbeknownst to Maddy, Nate was struggling with his sexual orientation and his relationship with his father. Maddy and Nate turned out to be very bad for each other, getting in fights and frequently breaking up, then getting back together. When they were broken up, they would try to make each other jealous by flirting with other people in front of one another, and that always just made things worse. Maddy would also hook up with other guys so they could finance her lifestyle when Nate wasn't around.

When we first meet her, though, it's obvious that Maddy and Nate's relationship isn't one of equals. She says that Nate makes her feel bad about herself, and that he "criticizes everything about her". This is an early warning sign that the relationship is actually abusive, and Maddy isn't just a tumultuous on-again, off-again girlfriend. She's an abuse victim. Maddy herself is unable to see it that way for much of season 1, though, insisting that she and Nate are in love and that nobody else understands their relationship. She does Nate's bidding even when he asks her to do awful things, because she feels like he's the only person who loves and understands her. She mistakes the passionate feelings she has for "real love", when really they are a combination of tempestuous teenage hormones and trauma-bonding from Nate's abuse.

At a carnival, Maddy confides in her best friend, Cassie, that she's gone through Nate's phone and found pictures of other guy's dicks on it, and she wonders what that could mean. Maddy and Cassie do molly together, and afterwards Maddy confronts Nate and his family at their stand for the county chili cook-off, saying she knows that none of them like her and tipping over a pot of chili. Nate drags Maddy away by her arm and then, after dragging Maddy behind a trailer out of view of the crowd, chokes her hard enough to leave bruises that last for a long time after. At first, Nate tells Maddy that she's dead to him, but when he realizes she's seen the picture on his phone, he changes his tune and apologizes to manipulate her into staying with him and not telling anyone what she saw on his phone.

After the carnival, Maddy agonizes over her bruises in the mirror. She realizes what Nate did was wrong, and his volatile nature makes her worry that he might really hurt her someday. However, she thinks to herself that she'll always love him no matter what he does or how badly he treats her. Maddy acknowledges this even though it makes her sick to do so.

The marks left by Nate on Maddy end up causing problems for both of them. Maddy tries to cover the marks Nate left, but after falling asleep in class and generally making it obvious she's not doing well, a teacher gets the school authorities involved of Maddy's concerning behavior, which leads to her marks being exposed, and the notification of the police. Maddy's parents finger Nate as the culprit even though Maddy tries to cover up for him. Maddy doesn't want to press charges but her mother does, and because Maddy is 17 and legally a minor, the decision is ultimately her mother's and not hers. This leads to Maddy being taken down to the police station and, when she refuses to show the police her marks voluntarily, she is strapped to a table, has her shirt cut off, and photographs taken of her bruises against her will.

Maddy continues to believe she is in love with Nate and to see him secretly, despite what he did and the fact that there's an ongoing police investigation against him for assaulting her. Nate convinces Maddy to go to the police and lie about being assaulted by another man, a 22-year-old she hooked up with at a party out of jealousy to get back at Nate.

Because Maddy was 17 and the guy was 22, their hook-up could result in a statutory rape charge for him even if the sex was consensual, if Maddy were to go to the police and say they had sex. The guy is able to be blackmailed by Nate into giving a false confession because of Nate threatening to get him arrested for statutory for sleeping with Maddy while she was underage; Maddy also agrees to testify that this was actually the person who choked her, not Nate, so that she and Nate can be together. This same guy had earlier been beaten up by Nate after Maddy lied about being "blacked out" while having sex with him in order to escape slut-shaming; Nate didn't believe Maddy was really blacked out but liked the fantasy of beating somebody up to protect her anyway.

With the help of some other machinations of Nate's, involving manipulating one of Maddy's other friends, the other guy ends up taking the fall for Maddy's assault and Nate gets off the hook. While Maddy is shown to have some regret about doing this, she's so deep in Nate's thrall that she's mostly just happy to have the chance to get to be with him as she believes she will never feel for anyone else the same way she feels for Nate. Maddy is convinced Nate truly loves her like nobody else can, and cannot face the reality that she's being physically and emotionally abused.

Maddy and Nate are not destined to be together for long, though. Later, Nate is unable to get it up while attempting intimacy with Maddy. This leads to Maddy confronting Nate about his sexuality, although she isn't angry or demeaning and instead, she attempts to reassure Nate telling him that "sexuality is a spectrum" and that it doesn't matter to her if he likes guys. This only makes Nate angrier, though, and he ends up attacking Maddy violently once again. This leads to Maddy stealing a recording that Nate's closeted father, Cal, made of himself with Jules, a trans girl who is a friend and classmate of Maddy's. Maddy later watches the tape, completely shocked by what she sees.

At the winter formal dance, because Nate's parents dislike Maddy, Nate brings another girl as a cover so he can meet up with Maddy at the dance. However, Maddy and Nate end up trying to make each other jealous all night before eventually agreeing to call off their relationship as it no longer makes either of them happy.

When the next season begins, Maddy is baby-sitting for a little boy, whom she adores and develops a sweet relationship with. She's a surprisingly adept baby-sitter and seems to enjoy spending time with him, playing video games and tucking him into bed. Despite her temper and blunt nature, Maddy is gentle and very patient with the little boy. However, what she enjoys most about her job is trying on the clothes of the boy's wealthy mother, Samantha, as well as having Samantha herself as a mentor who she can look up to and get advice about school, fashion, friendships and boys.

Nate secretly begins dating Maddy's best friend, Cassie, three weeks after his breakup with Maddy. Maddy nearly catches the two of them making love at a party, but doesn't. Later, Nate cancels plans with Cassie to try to rekindle his relationship with Maddy, even bringing flowers and jewelry to her on her birthday at her party at Cassie's house. However, they don't officially get back together. Maddy gets angry at Nate for always coming back to her whenever he feels like it, but then refusing to truly commit to her by insisting they're not getting back together even though he just acted like he wanted to reconcile. However, Cassie, who has gotten very drunk at this point, throws up in the pool, disrupting Nate and Maddy's fight.

Eventually, Rue - the main character and another friend of Maddy's, who is struggling with addiction - reveals Nate and Cassie's sexual relationship after a failed rehab attempt by Cassie and her sister Lexi's mom, Cassie, Lexi, Maddy and Kat. This causes chaos as Maddy flies into a rage realizing Cassie has betrayed her. Maddy is implied to be angrier about Cassie than Nate, as Maddy no longer expects anything good from Nate despite her draw towards him. However, she thought that she and Cassie were best friends and that Cassie could always be trusted. Maddy is absolutely furious.

Later, Nate goes to Maddy's home to confront her about the CD containing his father's affair with Jules. Nate berates Maddy about the disc, and although she initially claims not to know what he's talking about, he eventually puts a gun first to her head and then to his own, threatening to kill himself if she does not give up the disc. Maddy tells him it's in her purse, and he takes it. After he leaves, she collapses, sobbing. It's later revealed that Nate wanted the CD to protect Jules, whom he gives it to. However, threatening Maddy to do this turns out to have been completely unnecessary as, according to Alexa Demie who plays Maddy, Maddy would not want for Jules to get hurt and would have given the CD to Jules on her own eventually anyway. (This was, in fact, the initial plan before the script was changed!)

Maddy is hurt and traumatized. Nate is now openly dating Cassie, who he also treats poorly.

Cassie's sister Lexi ends up putting on a play about the lives of herself and her friends, which among other things touches on Cassie and Maddy's friendship, and how Maddy often stayed with Cassie and Lexi when things weren't going well for her at home. This makes Maddy very emotional, reflecting on her relationship with Cassie, which at this point has come to supersede her relationship with Nate as she now cares more about reconciling with Cassie than getting back together with Nate, demonstrating her growth as before she was only wanting to be with Nate no matter what the cause. In fact, Maddy no longer wants to be with Nate at all.

However, after Nate breaks up with her during the play as he is humiliated by a homoerotic segment Lexi wrote about him, Cassie storms onto the stage and tries to disrupt the play. This causes Maddy to follow Cassie on stage to beat her up as she feels that Cassie only has herself to blame for how she is portrayed in the play. Cassie runs off stage with Maddy in hot pursuit while some onlookers yell at Maddy to stop and others yell at Maddy to "beat her ass". The two get into a physical altercation, which Maddy easily wins.

Later on, the two talk in the bathroom, with Cassie looking far worse for wear than Maddy, who is mending a small cut on her foot.

Personality:

Pros:
  • Caring. At first blush, her blunt nature and spoiled persona make Maddy seems like a stereotypical high school mean girl, but in reality, she's actually quite caring and sweet underneath her stuck-up exterior. She is always there for her friends, and she's kind to children. Her relationship with the little boy that she baby-sits is sweet and sincere, and Maddy shows a high degree of both gentle caring and playfulness towards the little boy. She is surprisingly good with young children, as she is simultaneously protective of them but also willing to play around with them on their level. She helps Lexi with her confidence, and in general she seems to have a soft spot for shy or "wallflower" type people and seems to want to protect them. While Maddy isn't always caring of everyone and can be harsh or dismissive under some circumstances, this has more to do with her generally pessimistic outlook on people and life rather than any actual malice. In many instances though, she's quite sweet, compassionate and sincere towards both her friends and those in need.
  • Loyal and protective to those close to her. Maddy is very protective of her friends and loved ones. If one of her friends is being picked on or treated unfairly, Maddy is the first one to speak up for them. If one of her friends is sitting alone, Maddy will go out of her way to make sure they're included in the group. If someone messes with somebody she cares about, they're messing with Maddy too. If one of her friends is in crisis, Maddy will listen patiently and console them, although she'll also give them her honest opinion and advice if she thinks they need it, which means she can sometimes word her opinions in a harsh and blunt way. It's mostly out of love, though - and she can also be sweet and sensitive to their feelings, such as the pep talk she gave Kat on her birthday. If you're in her circle, Maddy's always got your back.
  • Determined. When Maddy sets her sights on something or someone, she goes after it and doesn't waver. She doesn't back down and will continue to go for what she wants. If she doesn't get it the first time, she tries again. Because of her confident, it doesn't occur to her that she doesn't deserve to have what she wants, and she'll fight for it every step of the way. She'll also fight for her friends, too. When she feels bonded to someone, she'll fight to continue the relationship even if they wrong her. If she is interested in person, she'll make sure they're aware of her interest without shyness or fear. She isn't someone who can be cowed or intimidated into backing down from what's important to her.
  • Confident. Maddy has high levels of self-esteem, to the point that confidence just radiates off of her. Rue says in a voice over that Maddy has always been confident, and her confidence helps draw people to her. When she was younger, her confidence was a big part of the reason she did so well in the beauty pageants she used to compete in, and as a teenager, her confidence helps her make friends and fit in with other people easily. She's not invulnerable - when we first meet her in the pilot, she's talking about how Nate, her abusive boyfriend, makes her feel bad about herself with his constant criticisms - but as long as nobody is actively trying to make her feel bad about who she is, Maddy is naturally a very confident and self-assured person. She admits to Lexi she used to feel stupid doing things like wearing very heavy makeup until she "decided not to feel stupid". Maddy believes that confidence is something where nobody can tell if it's real or not, and that as long as you act confident, people will believe it. This means they will believe in you, too.
  • Charismatic. "[She] knew who she was from an early age... people just loved her," Rue's voiceover says of Maddy. The roots of Maddy's charisma can be a bit hard to trace, because it's almost like something inside of her. Rue states that she's just always had it. However, it doesn't hurt that Maddy is outgoing, extroverted and fun to be around, but also knows how to read a room and when to chill out a little. Maddy loves people and being around them, and is always surrounded by a group of friends and admirers. She just has a way of drawing people to her and a charming quality that makes many people enamored with her. Maddy often uses her charisma to her own advantage for selfish reasons, however she is not completely selfish in every way. She also uses her charisma to benefit others, either by using it to get them things directly or just to make them feel good, by making them feel special and seen. Maddy enjoys being around others, and she likes it when she can make other people feel good and become the best version of themselves, too.

  • Cons:
  • Emotional. Maddy is extremely emotional when in crisis, and often struggles when she can't get support emotional support. Left to her own devices, without someone to be there for her and comfort her, Maddy will tailspin and begin making bad decisions, letting her emotions guide her. Although she is very intelligent, Maddy is often governed more by emotions than by logic whenever she is in crisis or otherwise very upset, and requires support or talking down from friends or other trusted people in to not make bad decisions when she is in this sort of situation.
  • Selfish. Maddy grew up in a household where her mother was a nail tech who worked scrubbing rich people's feet and her father struggled to hold down a job. This taught her from a young age that there are some people who get waited on by others, and some who are waited on. She's always wanted to be one of the people who gets waited on. This causes her to put herself and her own needs first very often, especially when it comes to boys, who she frequently manipulates into buying her clothes or other expensive items with her attention. According to Kat, she can also be self-absorbed when it comes to talking about her boy problems when she's having them, as she will commandeer conversations to make them about herself and her problems with boys, especially Nate.
  • Jealous. Maddy is extremely jealous when it comes to her on-off abusive ex-boyfriend, Nate Jacobs. Whenever Nate is with another girl, Maddy gets extremely jealous and will feel the need to flirt or dance with other guys in front of him to make him feel as jealous as she is feeling. She gets extremely angry when she sees Nate with other girls. Interestingly, this is only really ever seen with Nate, and Maddy doesn't display this same jealousy in other circumstances, i.e. she is happy for her friends' successes and cheers them on rather than being bitter. This suggests that at least part of Maddy's "jealousy" isn't real jealousy at all but is actually a trauma-bonding reaction to Nate's abuse as she craves his approval despite her anger with him; however, I'm still listing it because it does suggest Maddy has the potential to be extremely jealous and possessive in the right circumstances, especially if someone brings out the worst in her.
  • Easily angered. Maddy has a temper! She can be easily angered in some circumstances, and can lash out either physically or verbally. Sometimes her anger is righteous in nature and is motivated by a desire to correct an injustice or protect someone she loves, such as when she beats up a girl for being racist towards her. She also becomes angry when her friends are in trouble and will gladly fight for them on their behalf. However, Maddy can also be angered for petty reasons, or just because she didn't get her way. She is willing to listen to advice and can be talked out of an angry spiral if the other person's reasoning is sound, so it's not a total lost cause, however she is still known to be "crazy" and blow a gasket when she's been crossed or wronged in some way.
  • Immature. Maddy is still young and has a somewhat immature outlook on life in many regards. She "enjoys doing nothing", and admits to wanting men to finance a wealthy lifestyle for her while she does nothing. She seems to be easily influenced by fiction, as she decides to base her life on Sharon Stone's character in "Casino"; she also watches porn not because it arouses her (it doesn't), but to get ideas for what guys like in bed. Finally, she seems to have a worldview that's very self-focused, not necessarily in a malicious way, but because of her emotional nature she tends to be very reactive to immediate events. She also admits to actively enjoying fighting. While Maddy won't deliberately start a fight for no reason at all, she does admit to enjoying escalating conflicts so she can have an excuse to fight. Her mentor figure, Samantha, does to help her with these traits somewhat, and helps Maddy to put things in perspective at times, although their relationship can be somewhat questionable. This shows Maddy's potential for growth and that some of her negative traits can be overcome with time and the right environment.
